| What to do with our 4 legged friend during the holidays?

 English translation below

1. Vamos a llevar a nuestro perro/gato con nosotros?

3. Vamos a dejar a nuestro perro/gato con algún amigo o familiar?

Vamos a plantearnos cada escenario y aclarar juntos dudas e inquietudes.

Just as throughout the year our best friend is part of our daily life and shares the routine with us; vacations are a very nice time to share together.

But whether or not we can share it, we are going to need special planning. If we take our dog or cat with us, you can read this article; and if not, what follows will help you with the organization.

To start we can start with 3 important questions:

1. Are we going to take our dog / cat with us?
2. Are we going to leave our dog / cat in a nursery or boarding school?
3. Are we going to leave our dog / cat with a friend or family member?

We are going to consider each scenario and clarify together doubts and concerns.

1. We are going to take our dog/cat with us
If we decide to take him, the first thing we should do is consult with our trusted veterinarian to ask for his advice. It is important that we tell him the details of the trip and the means of transport that he himself will require, so that he can advise us better. Once this is defined, our own veterinarian will be able to guide us on the documentation required by the chosen destination. Many times this documentation requires several weeks of preparation, specific vaccines, or even some destinations ask that our dog have the identification chip. For this reason, we emphasize consulting with a veterinarian who has experience in the management of this type of procedures and documents.

It is also important that we contemplate how accustomed he is to the means of transport in which we will move: car, plane or boat. If he needs to go in a carrier cage, it is extremely important to check if he is used to it enough so that the trip is the least traumatic and stressful for him.

Important! When organizing a trip together, always but always, we prioritize both the physical and emotional health of our dog or cat, evaluating the best option for him.

2. We are going to leave our dog / cat in a boarding house
If we decide to leave it in a boarding school or nursery, we will also need a lot of planning. The first thing is to investigate possible pensioners. We can ask acquaintances, friends, we can even look on social networks if they have any pages and the comments and experiences of other families. Personally, I think it is key to know as deeply as possible the place where our friend is going to stay. Once chosen, we have to check that they have availability (some places are in high demand and run out of space quickly).

Before accepting it, they will surely ask us for information about our dog (sex, whether or not it is neutered, if it has problems relating to other male / female dogs, if it has vaccinations and deworming up to date, what it eats, among other information) and even later, they will surely ask us to take it so that they can get to know it and so that we can get to know the place, and our furry will become familiar. It is good if we can ask at the boarding house if they allow us to leave a blanket or bed for our dog, so it smells familiar.

There are many pensioners who today have WhatsApp groups or closed groups on Facebook, where they share photos of their furry guests every day and that allows us to follow their day to day and feel a little closer.

3. We are going to leave our dog/cat with a friend or family member
Finally, if our family member / friend stays in our house, everything is much easier since we will not have to move our dog to a place that he does not know. In fact, in the case of cats, I personally think this option is the best.

It will only be necessary to indicate to whoever takes care of the departure times and food of our friend, amounts of food, etc. and ideally that you share with him some hours of the day.

If instead we have to take him to the house of someone we know, we will also comment on his routine, we will indicate the food that he eats and quantities, and we can leave him some toys and his bed so that he feels at home. We take into account guaranteeing, whether in our home or in that of an acquaintance, the safety of the same to prevent accidents in our absence.

Let us always remember in any of the cases to leave a list with emergency veterinarians as well as the health documentation of our dog, in case they have to go to the veterinarian, and their badge -if we go outside the country and our phones. They are not going to work, we should leave you an alternative badge with a number that is in operation – so that you are always identified.

I add a newer option but that may be useful. We personally used it on a trip with Mechita and were very satisfied: the dog / cat sitters apps. These platforms connect people who want to take care (there is also the option of walking, training, so that they stay at your house or take the animal home) dogs or cats and families that need this help. I think that among expats -when you don’t have close family or you haven’t become friends yet- this option is extremely interesting.

Sitters are usually checked by the app, payments are made securely through the app and people are usually rated by the families who hire them, so you can look at the ratings before hiring someone.

In Europe the most common are Pawshake and Trusted Housesittters, in USA Rover and in Argentina there was Dog Hero but it stopped working a little while ago (I don’t know the reason).

Once you meet someone you like and you liked the way they take care of your little dog, you can stay in touch and always hire them.

It is important to keep in mind the time of the holidays from the day we decide to incorporate a puppy into our family, not because it is an impediment or a problem, but because it will require planning, time and probably an additional sum of money.

On our Instagram you will find a lot of useful information to organize and travel with your furry.
