Viajando con perros o gatos en avión | Traveling with dogs or cats by plane

 English translation below

American Airlines
https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/special-assistance/pets.jsp

Air France
https://www.airfrance.fr/FR/en/common/voyage-en-avion/preparation-voyage/animaux-avion.htm

To travel with dogs and cats by plane, beyond all the advice and tips that can be read online, one of the most important things is to be clear about each airline particular information and rules.

I will always advise you to double (and triple!) check the requirements of each airline before buying a ticket or kennel for the dog (whether it’s cabin or hold).

I leave you all the highlighted information of each one about traveling with pet in cabin and the links with information about pet in cabin, hold and cargo:

American Airlines
https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/special-assistance/pets.jsp

You can travel with up to 2 checked pets that meet the minimum age and health requirements of your destination. Please note that as capacity is limited, we accept checked pets on a first-come basis. When checking a pet, you’ll need to:

  • Contact Reservations at least 48 hours prior to travel
  • Check in at the ticket counter
  • Allow extra check-in time (can’t check pets more than 4 hours before your flight)
  • Complete a checklist with an agent
  • Provide a health certificate

Air France
https://www.airfrance.fr/FR/en/common/voyage-en-avion/preparation-voyage/animaux-avion.htm

  • Your animal must have all required vaccines in order to be permitted on board.
  • All dogs and cats traveling within the European Union must be identified by an electronic chip. It should also possess a European passport. Provided and completed by an authorized veterinarian, the passport identifies your pet and certifies that it is properly vaccinated.
  • We recommend that you check with the embassy of your destination country to learn more about national regulations. For example, for travel to Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom or Malta, additional sanitary conditions apply.
  • For travel outside the European Union, be sure to consider the regulations enforced in both the originating and destination countries (vaccinations, quarantine, etc.).
  • Air France declines all responsibility for any costs incurred (booking modification fees, hotel stay, kennel fees, etc.) in case your animal is refused transport due to non-compliance with our provisions, or in case your animal is refused upon arrival due to non-compliance with the provisions established by the country of destination.

Air France has an online shop to buy kennels or bags for pet in cabin that meets IATA and airplane flying conditions.

United Airlines
https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/animals.html

Requirements for in-cabin pets

  • Puppies and kittens must be at least four months (16 weeks) old.
  • Pets can’t travel with unaccompanied minors.
  • If you want to bring aboard an additional pet, you’ll need to buy an extra ticket for that pet and pay an additional $125 each way. Your pet must also always remain in the floor space under the seat.
  • If your pet doesn’t fit in a kennel, then they’ll need to travel with our PetSafe® program.
  • Pets must travel on the same flights as the traveler responsible for them.
  • If there’s an emergency, oxygen service won’t be available for pets.
  • Documentation
  • There are various state and country entry rules for animals, and it’s up to you to know what they are and to comply with them.
  • If you’re traveling within the continental U.S., we require you to bring a health certificate (talk to your veterinarian) and proof of your pet’s latest rabies vaccine. You cannot travel within 30 days of your pet’s rabies vaccination.
  • If you’re traveling to Hawaii or internationally, please see the “Hawaii and international travel” section below. And if you’re traveling to the U.S. from another country, please see the “Health declarations and vaccination requirements for dogs and cats entering the U.S.” section below.

Carriers and kennels
A pet traveling in cabin must be carried in an approved hard-sided or soft-sided kennel. The kennel must fit completely under the seat in front of you and remain there at all times. The maximum dimensions for hard-sided kennels are 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm). The recommended maximum dimensions for soft-sided kennels are 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm). Soft-sided pet carriers can exceed these dimensions slightly because they are collapsible and able to fit underneath a seat without blocking the aisle. Only one pet is allowed in a kennel, and the animal must be able to stand up and turn around comfortably. For questions, please contact the United Customer Contact Center at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

Booking an in-cabin pet
If you want to bring your pet into the cabin, you’ll need to indicate you are traveling with your pet ahead of time. You can do this when booking your trip on united.com and indicating the number of travelers in your reservation. Follow the prompts under “Pets in cabin.” You can also add your pet to your existing reservation through Manage Reservations on united.com

Add a pet to your reservation
Please note: United’s in-cabin pet policy applies to flights operated by United and United Express® only. For codeshare flights, please check the operating carrier’s in-cabin pet policy. If you are traveling on multiple airlines, please check with each carrier individually to make sure your pet can travel and for each airline’s restrictions. United can only accept your pet for flights operated by United and United Express.

At the airport with an in-cabin pet
When you arrive at the airport with your in-cabin pet, please check in with a United customer service representative who will give you a bright yellow bag tag to attach to your pet’s kennel.

On board with an in-cabin pet
Your pet must stay in their kennel with the door closed at all times while in the airport, at the boarding area and while on board the plane.
Your pet’s kennel must stay at your feet, underneath the seat in front of you.

Larger dogs and cats and all other animal species, regardless of their weight and size, are not allowed in the cabin.

To enable you to take your pet with you into the cabin as carry-on baggage, we need your confirmation that the animal meets the stated requirements. You can take a small cat or dog with you into the Economy Class cabin of most KLM flights, and in Business Class on most KLM flights within Europe. Make sure to meet these requirements:

  • Your pet must be at least 10 weeks old.
  • Your pet must travel in a suitable pet travel bag of max. 46 x 28 x 24 cm (L x W x H). Your pet must be able to stand up and lay down comfortably.
  • Total weight of your pet and travel bag or kennel combined may be max. 8 kg (18 lbs).
  • The kennel must be put under the seat in front of you (therefore exit rows are excluded). It is not allowed to take your pet out of the travel bag or kennel during the flight.
  • Please note that we have room for a limited number of kennels in the cabin. Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring a pet in the cabin in Business Class on intercontinental KLM flights, because there is no space for your pet under the seat in front of you.
  • Special rules apply to bringing your assistance dog into the cabin. You can request more information on travelling with service animals from KLM CARES.

Iberia
https://www.iberia.com/gb/faqs/pets/

  • Acceptable PETs in Cabin: dogs, cats, fish, turtles and birds (except birds of prey).
  • Take them with you in the cabin if they don’t weigh more than 8 kg. (including their cage or pet pack, except for guide dogs and emotional support animals) with previous authorisation from the Booking Office.
  • The container may be a maximum of 45 cm in length, 35 cm in width and 25 cm in depth, provided that the sum of those 3 measurements does not exceed 105 cm.
  • As the number of cages is restricted on the basis of the type of aeroplane, the carriage of animals must be authorised by the Booking Office.
  • Authorisation will only be given for journeys when all legs are confirmed.
  • The size and weight of animals must be in keeping with the limits established for inbound and outbound flights.
  • In no case will the animal be able to leave its carrier inside the cabin, and the passenger is responsible for looking after it.
  • Please remember that if the carrier does not meet the minimum conditions for acceptance, it will be refused boarding. You can purchase such a kennel at larger pet shops or specialist shipping agents.
