Viajando de Argentina (Bs. As.) a Irlanda (Dublin) con Ofe | Traveling from Argentina (Bs. As.) to Ireland (Dublin) with Ofe

Gracias Tati y Ofe!

When my boyfriend received a job offer in Ireland and we considered the possibility of emigrating from Argentina, our only exclusive condition was that Ofe – our 6-year-old dog – could join us.

Our first question was whether Ofe could normally enter Ireland, or whether the country – being an island – required some kind of quarantine for animals. Although the entry requirements vary according to the country of origin, there is no obligation for pets to quarantine – as long as they meet all the sanitary entry requirements!

Having overcome this obstacle, we find the following: it is extremely difficult to rent a house in Dublin, and this difficulty increases markedly if you are looking to rent with a dog. The supply of pet friendly housing is extremely limited in most cities in Ireland!

Reading recommendations and suggestions from other people, we decided that the best alternative would be for my boyfriend to travel first and once he found accommodation, I would travel with Ofe.

In Ireland it is very normal for apartment owners to ask for a “reference” from a previous rental. In our case, we prepared a sample reference letter in English and asked the owners of our last two rentals if they could sign them. We make sure that in both cases the letters mention Ofe! Additionally, we did a “CV” for Ofe telling a bit about her, and we asked our training school for a letter mentioning that Ofe was educated – it’s not a bad idea to ask the vet for this either!

An alternative that we also handled was to search for rentals by direct owner, since it is easier for an owner to authorize a pet in a home than a real estate agency.

Once we had the accommodation in Dublin and after some paperwork, preparation and above all nerves, Ofe and I arrived in Dublin on May 22, 2021.

There are a few things to keep in mind when arriving in Ireland:

  • According to the Irish health authority, each airline has the power to determine whether to transport pets in the cabin or in the hold to Ireland. It is important to confirm this with the airline before buying the ticket!
  • If you are arriving from outside the European Union, you can enter through the Dublin, Shannon or Cork airports, or through the ports of Dublin, Cork, or Rosslare.
  • It is also possible to get to Ireland with pets by ferry! We checked this just in case when we didn’t know if we could fly Ofe to Dublin. Ferries cross from Ireland to Spain, France, and England. The journey is long, but possible.
  • If we are arriving from outside the EU, in all cases it is necessary to notify by e-mail that we will be arriving with a pet, so that the health authorities can control the documentation of the animal. This is done at least one day before arrival in Ireland. Once there, the health authorities scan the dog’s chip, review the documentation and charge a fee for the checkup. We had no problems with this.

Although Dublin is not a city known for being pet friendly, it has many beautiful parks to visit. The surroundings of Dublin also have areas where we can go on nature walks.

As for transport within Dublin, dogs are not accepted on buses or LUAS – a kind of tram that runs within the city. On the medium-distance train (DART) yes. In our case, we always rent cars and use them with a cover without any problem – driving across the street is another story!

There aren’t many beardies in Dublin, and Ofe draws a lot of attention – they always tell us she’s “gorgeous” ❤️. Dublin has a very diverse population, there are people from all over the world, and the Irish are very friendly and always make you feel welcome in their country.

Thanks Tati and Ofe
